There are various ways that a thief can find out and steal the information that is belonging to someone. Such means can be by digging in trash cans or dumpsters. Once trash is on a curb in the dumpster, it technically becomes public domain, and anyone can have access to the information. Credit cards that are sent to people, but never used, are often thrown into the trash. Cutting up old and new credit cards alike can prevent people from accessing the credit card information. Shredding papers in a paper shredder can ruin documents that have viable information on it as well. There are even a few paper shredders that can shred credit cards one at a time, which is also beneficial when it comes to destroying any important information.

In today’s massive wave of technology, many identity predators are taking it to the online highway to access important financial information. Sometimes, people will send out e-mails to individuals, asking them for passwords to their accounts, or other information, such as a home address. This form of theft is called “phishing”. Typically, a bank or credit card company will only correspond thru the mail or with a telephone call. Information of this type should never be given to any third party, more especially to anyone that claims to be with a certain corporation. If at any time an individual receives such erroneous information, they should contact their bank or credit card company immediately to resolve the situation.

Being alert to such situations and taking precautionary steps to prevent an occurrence from proceeding is always important. Knowing when to contact a bank and/or credit card company is also of great importance. Above all, keeping private information private by not giving out information on the phone or over the internet (unless the site states that it is a secure connection) is the best way to stay safe in all circumstances.
